Java turmeric is a plant which has a unique shaped flowers (clustered) colored dark yellow to purple growing well in the lowlands at 1500 meters above sea level and reaching 2-2.5 meters tall. Its leaves are long round like banana leaves which stem closed to each other to form the stem. The rhizome of Java turmeric has distinctive smell and yellowish color of the fruits.

Since the era of indonesian ancestors, Curcuma xanthorrhiza / Java turmeric has been used as a traditional herbal plant. In Indonesia, this plant is known by the society as Temulawak. This plant has been continuously used since the ancient times to treat various diseases such as liver disorders, menstruation, jaundice, fatigue, constipation, fever, abdominal pain, itching, sores, malaria, etc.

There are 2 ways to process and prepare Java turmeric. Traditionally preparation involves the rhizome to be chopped, dried, ground into powder or chopped, boiled and then served as a drink. This way not much benefit can be obtained. Most part of Java turmeric plant cannot be digested or absorbed by our body. There is a risk of contamination with heavy metals environment, soil or water and heavy metals cannot be eliminated by the traditional way of preparation.

Lately many researchers around the globe, conduct researches on Java turmeric. Researches show that Java turmeric contains two important active ingredients named Curcumin and Xanthorrhizol.
